Welcome to Somerset County Blind CenterSomerset County Blind Center, a division of Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Vision Impaired, is an outgrowth of a industrial facility for the blind & visually impaired which began in Somerset in January 1995. This industrial facility was started in cooperation with the Westmoreland County Blind Association and was projected to be an independent entity since its inception. In 1996 the advisory Committee voted to incorporate as an independent agency. Thus, on January 6th 1997, incorporation documents were filed creating SCBCI granting 501(c)(3) status. Until the establishment of Somerset County Blind Center, in 1997, there was no facility for the blind in Somerset County. Therefore, efforts were directed to the establishment of a permanent center for the provision of these much needed services. Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Vision Impaired, Somerset County Blind Center's parent organization, has been helping restore autonomy and independence to the lives of Pennsylvania residents who are blind and vision impaired for more than eighty years. From education and prevention to rehabilitation and employment, the Association takes a comprehensive approach to services. Through generous donations from area residents and the support of businesses throughout the community, the Association, through the Susquehanna Foundation for the Blind, strives to help the blind and vision impaired take back their independence and improve their lives!
MissionIt is the mission of Somerset County Blind Center to provide social, vocational, rehabilitative and educational services for people who are blind or whose vision is impaired; to educate our community about blindness and its prevention; to advocated for the interests of people who are blind or whose vision is impaired; to advance our belief that people who are blind are entitled to and are capable of achieving full autonomy and independence; and to do so through responsible stewardship of the human and financial resources available.
